An afghan crochet rug is a simple easy project to make. It can be picked up whenever you have a few spare minutes, taken along on road, train, or plane trips to avoid boredom, and used as an elegant throw on a bed or sofa. You will get years of enjoyment out of using your afghan crochet rug and an awful lot of satisfaction out of creating it.
You can work these rugs in a crochet granny square pattern consisting of motifs joined together, or in long panels, or a combination of both. They can be worked in soft yarn and colors for a baby, or a vibrant mix of colors to use up remnants of yarn left over from other projects. Make a matching pillow with your left over yarn.
The right combination of color and texture can be created to complement any décor. The beautiful afghan crochet rug shown above consists of lines of motifs separated by treble panels with a row of puff stitches through the center.
This lovely cotton blanket below left, with it’s natural color, would enhance any room décor.
This striped afghan above right, is worked almost entirely in trebles. The colors can be easily adapted to match any room.
This colorful rug is crocheted in blocks. The main stitch used to create this rug is the treble stitch. The stitches most commonly used for this block style rug are afghan stitch and double crochet. When used this way these two stitches create a similar looking effect. The blocks can then be either sewn together using hem stitch, or crocheted together. Monogramming letters onto the blocks is a decorative way to finish this design. Click on the links below for free patterns.
The edges of your rug can be decorated in many varied ways. You can crochet an edging all around, or along each end, in a wide choice of colors and patterns.
Fringing is a very attractive way to finish your rug, and probably the easiest edge to make. If you’re a little more adventurous and would like to try something a bit different, why not make tassels?
